Turkish Language is a common and mandatory course in higher education institutions. It is a 2 credit course and studied in both semesters. The first semester, the course mainly focuses on grammar and the second semester on literary subjects; Yet, the primary purpose of the course is to let students gain critical and interrogative thinking habit and enable them to express themselves more efficiently with proper Turkish, either verbally or in written form.
In the course, it is also aimed to equip students with reading habit by means of reading, reviewing and discussing different literary genres such as prose, story and novel; Another goal of the course is teaching students the indispensability of reading on the way to become an intellectual individual. At the end of this two semester course, students’ language skills will improve in four main areas such as reading, listening, speaking and writing, all of which are fundamental in language learning; Students will also grasp the significance of language phenomenon, which is studied with its social, cultural and such aspects, when it comes to communication between individuals and masses. Course topics are studied not only being based on one single source but via variety of sources as well as discussions made on the articles written about the subjects.
Each student is definitely expected to attend the course and their performaces in the class are evaluated and reflected to their grade average.
