The stability of atherosclerotic plaques is mainly determined by the progress of calcification. This translates to Ca concentrations as well as the size of micro-calcifications, where sizes above approximately 50 μm indicate a stable plaque. Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) delivers information about calcium (Ca) concentrations in atherosclerotic plaques and offers a spatial resolution of a few 10 micrometers. Proper calibration for translating SAM into a quantitative method has not been performed due to a lack of a gold standard. High resolution (1 μm) x-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging and tomography at the Microprobe station of P06 in DESY would provide a gold standard for validation and calibration of SAM |
