Pharmaceutical biotechnology is a new and rapidly growing field of science, which uses biotechology principles in drug development. Majority of the drugs sold on the market today are bioformulations like antibodies, nucleic acids and vaccinations. Development of these bioformulations involves many various stages. These stages are identifying the underlying causes of diseases, understanding the molecular mechanisms which enable biomolecules functioning, synethesis and synthesis and purification of molecules, determination of product’s shelf life, stability, toxicity and immunogenecity, drug delivery system development, patenting and clinical trials. All these stages form pharmaceutical biotechnology’s fields of study. In pharmaceutical biotechnology department, which is a part of our University’s Pharmacology Faculty, scientific studies focus on “tissue engineering, artificial tissue/organ development and stem cells”. In our department, as an alternative to in vivo tests, three dimensional real-life artificial skins with live tissues are intended to be used for the testing of cosmetic and pharmaceutical active ingredients and new drugs. In our multidisciplinary reasearch laboratories, we provide freeze dryer for polymer tisue scaffold production and fully-equipped cell culture laboratory for cell and tissue culture, also tissue tracking device, microtome, fleurescant and confocal microscopes for tissue analysis.
