At Acıbadem University, on March 30, 2026, a panel entitled “AI in Academic Writing: Who Wrote It? What Do Ethics and Publishers Say?” was convened on the occasion of the 62nd Library Week. The panel, featuring Assistant Professor Dr. Ceren İlikan Rasimoğlu, Prof. Dr. Yeşim Işıl Ülman, and Library Director Ayça Aydemir Mazlumoğlu as speakers, attracted substantial interest from academics and students across various fields and disciplines.
According to the panel’s concluding report, artificial intelligence (AI) systems have revolutionary potential in research, ranging from automating data analysis to generating content; however, their use also raises critical ethical questions. In academic research and writing, the use of Responsible AI should be guided by the principles of Research Ethics. Although AI offers groundbreaking opportunities in research; such as ncluding the acceleration of research workflows, the enhancement of reproducibility, and the processing of large-scale datasets; it may also be biased due to the data on which it is trained, potentially leading to misleading results. Misuse of AI, manifested in practices such as automated paper generation or data fabrication, poses a significant threat to the integrity of scientific inquiry. Furthermore, these tools can produce outputs that onbscure the boundary between legitimate use and misconduct, raising concerns related to plagiarism, authorship, and citation practices, as well as potentially compromising data privacy.
To address these challenges, guideline documents that support the responsible use of AI by researchers provide concrete recommendations. Educational initiatives such as workshops and courses on AI ethics can be organized to equip researchers with the necessary competencies for ethical AI use. Universities can develop Research and Publication Policies, and institutions may establish Research Integrity Offices to provide support at an institutional level.
In conclusion, the responsible use of AI necessitates commitment to the following core values of research integrity: Reliability in ensuring the quality of research through rigorous attention to design, methodology, analysis, and referencing; honesty in developing, conducting, reviewing, reporting, and communicating research in a transparent, fair, comprehensive, and unbiased manner; respect toward colleagues, research participants, research subjects, society, ecosystems, cultural heritage, and the environment; and accountabbility (transparency) in the governance and organization of research across all stages from the conceptualisation to dissemination, as well as in education, supervision, mentoring, and broader societal impacts.
