Department of Nursing Evaluated Future Nursing Competencies Together with Stakeholders

The Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University, organized a Stakeholder Workshop under the theme “Future Nursing Competencies in a Changing Healthcare Ecosystem.” The workshop brought together academics, healthcare professionals, students, professional organizations, and non-governmental organizations to discuss the knowledge, skills, and competencies that future nurses should possess in response to transformations in healthcare services and evolving societal needs.

Evaluating the Future Needs of Nursing Education

The workshop was organized to evaluate the aims and outcomes of the undergraduate nursing program in light of the changing healthcare ecosystem and future nursing needs, and to discuss the knowledge, skills, and competencies that future nurses should possess with contributions from different stakeholder groups.

The workshop was conducted under the chairmanship of Assoc. Prof. Sevim Şen Olgay. The organizing committee consisted of faculty members of the Department of Nursing and a student representative.

Plenary Session and Program Presentations

The workshop began with a plenary session bringing participants together. Following the opening, Prof. Ükke Karabacak, Head of the Department of Nursing, provided information about the Undergraduate Nursing Program at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University. The session continued with the presentation of the Second Stakeholder Workshop Report by Assoc. Prof. Sevim Şen Olgay and concluded with the presentation of the Meta-Evaluation Panel Results Report by Assoc. Prof. Zehra Kan Öntürk.

Stakeholder Group Discussions

Following the plenary session, participants took part in simultaneous working sessions in five stakeholder groups: Academic Nurses, Nurse Managers, Healthcare Team Members and Nurses, Nursing Students, and Professional Associations and Non-Governmental Organizations. The workshop brought together academics from different universities, professionals working in various healthcare institutions, experts from different healthcare disciplines, and representatives of professional organizations and non-governmental organizations, ensuring broad stakeholder participation.

During the group sessions, participants discussed priorities regarding the future of the nursing profession in response to transformations in healthcare services, technological developments, and societal needs. Their views, experiences, and recommendations were gathered under key themes including artificial intelligence and digital transformation, value-based care, sustainability, climate change and the social determinants of health, and intercultural education. The sessions also included discussions on how nursing education can adapt to current and future needs.

Sharing Evaluations and Recommendations

Following the completion of the group sessions, a closing session was held in which the evaluations and recommendations of each stakeholder group were shared with all participants. The perspectives that emerged from the group discussions were brought together on a common ground, enabling a comprehensive evaluation of the future of the Undergraduate Nursing Program.

A Collaborative Platform for the Future of Nursing Education

Held under the theme “Future Nursing Competencies in a Changing Healthcare Ecosystem,” the Stakeholder Workshop contributed to the evaluation of the Undergraduate Nursing Program through the perspectives of internal and external stakeholders, the discussion of how transformations in healthcare services can be reflected in educational processes, and the identification of areas for future program development.

Bringing together academia, healthcare professionals, students, professional organizations, and non-governmental organizations, the workshop provided a collaborative platform for a comprehensive discussion on the future of nursing education.
