The GEMSTONE Project, coordinated by our University, has published a book titled ‘Making It Work: GEMSTONE Project’s Better Practices for Horizon Europe Newcomers.’ This new guide contains the lessons learned, methods tested, and strategies developed during the implementation of the GEMSTONE Project, funded by Horizon Europe and coordinated by Acıbadem University.
Developed as part of the project’s dissemination activities, the book is an important output designed to serve research managers, support staff, university administrations, and policy actors in Widening countries that have low participation in EU Framework Programmes and exhibit lower research and innovation performance compared to other countries. The book aims to support efforts to strengthen research capacity, improve institutional support systems, and enhance competitiveness within the European Research Area (ERA).
Unlike traditional best practice guides that typically focus on ideal conditions, ‘Making It Work’ focuses on solving real-world problems. The 12 documented better practices were developed and refined in response to the daily challenges encountered in a large-scale, multidisciplinary, and internationally coordinated EU project.
The book is structured around four thematic pillars that reflect the multifaceted nature of research excellence in Widening contexts: Communication and Stakeholder Engagement, Financial and Resource Management, Institutional Capacity and Team Development, and Operational Flexibility and Risk Management. Each practice includes a clear problem definition, the solution implemented by the GEMSTONE team, and the resulting impact.
This publication is specifically designed for research managers and research support staff working in universities, research centres, and project offices in Widening countries, as well as university leaders and policymakers, including rectors, deans, and scientific directors.
The GEMSTONE Project, funded under Horizon Europe WIDERA Twinning call, is coordinated by Acıbadem University in partnership with Lund University (Sweden) and ICONS (Italy). Focusing on neuroscience research and gene engineering, the project also addresses the goal of enabling Widening institutions to compete more effectively in the European research arena.
