The Strengthening Patient Care in Oncology Symposium-2: Current Approaches in Breast Cancer, organized collaboratively by the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University, and Acıbadem Maslak Hospital, Acıbadem Health Group, was held on October 19, 2026. The symposium aimed to provide a contemporary, multidisciplinary perspective on breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care, bringing together experts from various disciplines to share their knowledge and experience.

Following the opening remarks, the symposium commenced with the first panel, which focused on early diagnosis and screening approaches. Topics discussed included the advantages and disadvantages of radiological screening methods, personalized screening approaches, the needs of special populations, screening programs in Türkiye, and the role of nurses in early detection. Subsequent sessions addressed oncological outcomes and quality of life in breast cancer surgery, current approaches and targeted care in breast surgery, and developments in systemic treatment. The importance of symptom management as an integral component of patient care throughout the treatment process was also emphasized.

The second panel focused on the role of nutrition in breast cancer, lymphedema management and its impact on treatment outcomes, and the psychological aspects of life after cancer. The importance of holistically addressing the physical, psychological, and social needs of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer during and after treatment was highlighted. Furthermore, the effects of the disease on sexuality and fertility were discussed from both medical and nursing perspectives. This session emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing needs that patients may find difficult to express during the care process.

In the final part of the symposium, the session entitled “A Patient’s Journey: Breast Cancer During Pregnancy” examined the care journey of a patient diagnosed with breast cancer during pregnancy, drawing on the multidisciplinary care management model of the Senology Institute at Acıbadem Maslak Hospital. The session highlighted the importance of coordination among different specialties and individualized care planning in complex clinical situations.

The symposium concluded with closing remarks, having emphasized not only current scientific developments in breast cancer but also the importance of nursing care, symptom management, psychosocial support, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The event contributed to the exchange of knowledge and experience aimed at strengthening patient-centered and holistic approaches to breast cancer care.
