Acibadem University Health and Social Sciences Institutes, Bioethics Student Group, Medical Ethics Working Group organized Bioethics Days 5: Disasters and Bioethics Symposium at Acibadem University on 23 November 2023.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the disasters, specifically the earthquakes, from a multidisciplinary approach, regarding sociology, psychology and political science perspectives. As bioethics is a discipline that investigates value conflicts and ethical dilemmas in the fields of science, medicine, law, life sciences, natural sciences and social sciences, and it questions and delves into the ethical aspects of public and health policies through moral philosophy, ethical principles and values. In the symposium, Dr. Yesim Isil Ulman (bioethics), Dr. Gokhan Malkoc (Psychology), Dr. Asli Odman, Dr. Yetkin Baskavak dealt with the issue from multidisciplinary angles.
In conclusion, it was agreed that disaster management should be approached in the light of human rights and dignity. The right to health should be fulfilled as a social responsibility, such as providing shelter, food, housing, security for the affected people. A transparent, accountable and proportionate governance should be preserved. Right to privacy and confidentiality of victims should be ensured, as well as respecting the rights of future generations. The environment, the biosphere, biodiversity should be protected in a planned and rational manner based on scientific evidence. Public and health policies should be structured in a pluralistic, inclusive, participatory, and equitable manner in line with the rule of law. Disaster preparedness is as significant as the urgent response as well as the effective disaster governance.
