Within the scope of Acıbadem University’s Gemstone Project, the event titled “GEMSTONE: Challenges and Developments in Parkinson's Neurodegenerative Diseases” was held on July 2, 2024, at our university. The event, conducted in two sessions, commenced with an opening speech by the Director of the Gemstone Project, Prof. Filiz Onat, from the Department of Medical Pharmacology, School of Medicine, Acıbadem University.
The event featured presentations from esteemed academics, including Prof. Beki Kan, Head of the Department of Biophysics at Acıbadem University School of Medicine, Prof. Nazlı Başak and Prof. Yasemin Gürsoy Özdemir from Koç University, Prof. Franca Marino from Insubria University, Prof. Åsa Petersén from Lund University, and Prof. Cristoforo Comi from Piemonte Orientale University.
The primary aim of the meeting, titled “GEMSTONE: Challenges and Developments in Parkinson's Neurodegenerative Diseases,” was to share the latest research findings in Parkinson’s disease and neurodegenerative diseases and to discuss the challenges in this field. The event also aimed to present the findings of the GEMSTONE Project and to foster international collaboration by sharing knowledge and experiences through joint studies with IMMUPARKNET.
As part of the project, a double transgenic model was developed to determine the origin of the alpha-synuclein protein, which plays a significant role in Parkinson’s. The project findings were shared with a broad audience, to establish new collaborations and research opportunities.
During the event, participants had the opportunity to discuss the latest advancements in Parkinson’s and neurodegenerative diseases, translational research approaches, and the role of basic science research in clinical applications. The presentations by experts in the field facilitated the exchange of knowledge among attendees.
The event, attended by 61 individuals, provided medical students, doctoral candidates, and academicians interested in Parkinson’s and neurodegenerative diseases with the opportunity to participate in sessions and discussions, thereby strengthening collaboration among researchers.
