The Medicalization Symposium in Education, organized by the Department of Sociology at Acibadem University, took place on November 13, 2023. The event aimed to discuss the diagnoses of ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) and SLD (Specific Learning Disorder), which are among the causes of academic failure for the purpose of enhancing academic performance, and the use of psychostimulant drugs in light of field research findings. Metin Cevizci, a Research Assistant in the Department of Sociology at Acibadem University, presented his talk titled "Hyperactive or Naughty? The Medicalization of Academic Failure in Primary School," while Mert Ertubay, continuing his doctoral studies in the Sociology Ph.D. Program at METU, delivered a presentation titled "Medicalization of Academic Performance: Diagnosis of ADHD and Use of Psychostimulant Drugs Among University Students." Metin Cevizci, one of the speakers at the event, examined the reproduction of ignoring student subjectivity by 'medicalizing' students in the complex network of relationships between school, hospital, and rehabilitation center. Mert Ertubay discussed the normalization of the relationship between academic performance and the use of psychostimulant drugs. The event, attended by 50 people, ended with a question-and-answer session.
