Sociology Colloqium 5

On April 3, 2024, the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of our university held its fifth colloquium in honor of the Centennial of the Republic. Idil Guney Simsek, a lecturer at the Institute of Social Sciences, presented "National Music Debates and Modernization Efforts in Music During the Republican Era: The Turkish Five" focusing on the field of Music Sociology. In her presentation, Şimşek provided insights into how music sociology is approached in Turkey and shared fundamental information about the technical aspects of music. The event featured discussions on the musical endeavors associated with the Westernization movement in the Ottoman Empire, followed by an examination of the cultural policies of the Republican period from both a sociological and musicological perspective. The final part of the presentation debated the approaches of the Turkish Five, the first generation composers of the Republican period, through the analysis of a specific musical work.

The interactive event concluded with a question and answer session.
