As part of the 1st Dissemination Event of the Acibadem University Gemstone Project, the university hosted the Regional Symposium on Neurodevelopmental Aspects of Brain Disorders & Genetically Engineered Models, which took place between October 3rd and 4th. The symposium had 138 participants from both domestic and international backgrounds in the fields of Neurodevelopment and Genomic Engineering. This event, which is a significant step in advancing scientific research and innovation in the strategic areas of Genomic Engineering technologies and Neuroscience at our university, was organized with the support of the Turkish Brain Research Association.
The Gemstone Project, led by Acibadem University faculty member Prof. Filiz Onat, aims to enhance scientific productivity. The symposium emphasized the importance of scientific presentations, of funding opportunities for advancing neuroscience research, and the significance of university-industry collaboration.
On the first day of the symposium, Prof. Annamaria Vezzani from the Epilepsy and Therapeutic Strategies Laboratory in Italy, Dr. Annika Luettjohann from the Physiology Institute at Münster University in Germany, and Assoc. Prof. Nihan Çarçak Yılmaz from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Istanbul University delivered speeches in the fields of Genomic Engineering technologies and Neuroscience. In the afternoon session, laboratory research and capacity-building activities were discussed by Assoc. Prof. Kasım Diril from the Izmir Biomedicine and Genomic Center, Assoc. Prof. Meltem Kolgazi, and Assoc. Prof. Melike Şahiner from Acibadem University.
On the second day of the symposium, the agenda of researchers included topics related to neuroscience research and industry collaboration, with presentations by Prof. Emilio Russo from the University of Catanzaro Magna Grecia in Italy, Prof. Deniz Kırık from Lund University in Sweden, Assoc. Prof. My Andersson, and Dr. Ali Özüer, the President of Abdi İbrahim Bio, among others.
At the end of the event, awards were presented for the Best Oral Presentation and the Best Poster Presentation. Berfin Dağ received the award for the Best Oral Presentation for "Confirmation of PATL1 Gene as Neurodevelopmental Disease Gene by Fruit Fly Model," while Alper Bülbül won the award for the Best Poster Presentation with his presentation titled "A Comparative Analysis for Familial Exome Analysis: Identifying Infrequent Rare Variants in Families with Multiple Sclerosis."
