VII. School of Medicine Student Congress ALIS (A Look Into Science)

The annual international scientific student congress, ALIS (A Look Into Science), organized by students of Acıbadem University School of Medicine, aims to address diverse audiences and current topics in the field of health with a different theme each year. The 7th edition of the congress, held on May 17-18-19, 2024, offered a scientific and social program to its participants.This year's congress, themed “ALIS in Neuroland: Consciousness,” commenced with opening speeches by our School of Medicine student and ALIS Congress President, Bilal Kızılaslan, ALIS Congress Advisor and faculty member Prof. Şahin Şenay, and Dean of the  School of Medicine, Prof.  Nadi Bakırcı. Following this, Mehmet Ali Aydınlar, Chairman of our University’s Board of Trustees, delivered an honorary speech.

The congress, attended by nearly 750 participants, featured remarkable speeches by world-renowned professors, focusing on the central theme of "Consciousness." Notable speakers included Prof.   Anil Seth from the University of Sussex with “Consciousness in Humans and in Other Things,” evolutionary biologist and Michael Faraday Award winner Prof. Nick Lane from University College London with “What is a Feeling?”, leading brain and neurosurgeon Prof.  Hugues Duffau with “Neural Bases of Consciousness,” and neurology professor Prof.  Andrew Budson, who teaches at Boston and Harvard Universities, with “Conscious Memory.” Harvard University’s only Turkish scientist on the list, Assoc. Prof. Canan Dağdeviren, gave a presentation titled “Darkness is Necessary for Light,” while our university faculty member and pioneer of robotic surgery in our country, Prof.  Ali Rıza Kural, delivered “Hands That Touch Life.” Esteemed faculty members Prof. Yasemin Alanay and Prof. Ahmet Alanay shared their talk titled “Hand in Hand: Our Journey in Medicine and Academia.” As part of the “Social Speech,” personal development expert Mümin Sekman, who has delivered seminars on “Success” across Türkiye, engaged participants with an inspiring talk on “Conscious Success: How is the Consciousness of Success Developed in Humans?”

One of the parts of the program, including scientific sessions and workshops, took place at the Clinical Simulation and Advanced Endoscopic-Robotic Surgery Training Center (CASE) at our university. Thus, participants had the opportunity to develop themselves both scientifically and socially.

At the end of the congress, an awards ceremony was held during the gala at Adile Sultan Palace for the AIMS (Acıbadem University International Medical Students) Awards Project, initiated last year with the support of the Dean’s Officeof the School of Medicine, where students from various universities presented their research. In its 3rd year, students who ranked highly were honored with the Kerem Aydınlar Awards.
